Experience the wilderness of the land of fire and ice on this sailing adventure around Iceland’s coastline. Step onboard in Reykjavik, Iceland’s vibrant capital, and be prepared to leave city life behind: we’ll soon be heading off towards rural communities and secluded fjords.

Our first few days will be spent learning the ropes in the bays south and north of Snaefellsjokull, a dominant glacier-capped volcano. Then we’ll head up into the Westfjords, a spectacular unspoiled region that, because of its remote location, most tourists in Iceland never venture to. Sea Dragon will take us past Latrabjarg, the largest bird cliff in Europe, home to millions of puffins, guillemots, and gannets. We’ll sail down the fjords to anchor in dramatic bays, and stop over in Isafjordur, the Westfjord’s cultural centre.

Dragging ourselves away from this magical corner of Iceland, we’ll round Hornstrandir and its pristine nature reserve to spot kittiwakes and fulmars. We’ll make sure not to be too focused on the epic terrain so that we don’t miss a whale or pod of dolphins out to sea. From here it’s on to Akureyri on the North coast, passing by Drangey island – home to the outlaw Grettir from one of Iceland’s many Sagas.

This trip will be largely composed of day sails of various lengths, with the possibility of an overnight sail too. And during our “downtime,” we’ll never waste the late setting sun of the near-arctic summer. Some evenings we’ll launch the dinghy to land ashore and take a hike in this stunning scenery. Other times we might relax on deck with a book, or share stories with our new crew mates.

All meals on board Sea Dragon during this trip are delicious and vegetarian, with the addition of fish if we catch any along the way.

This is not a trip for the infirm or physically unfit – you MUST be able to go up and down the companionway and move safely about the boat while in rough conditions, have good balance, and be in good health. Please contact us with any health questions or if you answer “YES” to any of the questions on our health questionnaire prior to signing up for the trip!
