Spanish Rias, Whale & Dolphin watching | La Coruna to Madeira
September 17 – 25 2017
Depart: La Coruna
Length: 9 days, 8 nights
Focus: Adventure Sailing, Whale and Dolphin Watching
Join us in La Coruna, a Galician city with roots dating back to the Romans. It’s home to the Tower of Hercules, the oldest Roman lighthouse still in use, and a great spot to get a spectacular view of the peninsula and the bay. After meeting the other crew and learning about the boat, we’ll go out for a training sail, and, depending on weather, we’ll aim to stop into one of the beautiful Spanish Rias Baixas, perhaps to Vigo or Pontevedra? These beautiful river valleys provide spectacular protected anchorages on an otherwise unforgiving coastline. We’ll then head offshore, running down the coast of the Iberian Peninsula, a coastline inundated with huge pods of dolphins and whales. Last time we sailed this route, we had whales or dolphins follow the boat for hours every day for sunset, and even had a baby fin whale follow us for an hour, surfing down the waves alongside and rolling over and over, watching us all the while. We’ll end this trip at the mountainous island of Madeira, famous for it’s wine, toboggan rides, and beautiful location.
