We set out from Key West yesterday evening after making some final preparations and having dinner on the deck. We hoisted our sails in the midst of a fleet of catamarans and old-time schooners taking tourists out for a sunset cruise, which made for a very pleasant sendoff.

I managed  to get a few minutes of sleep before taking my first watch. Everyone takes watch in four hour shifts which divide up the day. My watch was from 10pm-2am, which is not the easiest to take when you are running on very little sleep and have been up since 4am traveling. It went well, nonetheless, save a bit of queasiness toward the end.

Life on the water is quite unstable, which can be rough on the stomach. You bob and shift with every wave and nothing on board is really stable. A couple of my crew mates have gotten quite seasick, but luckily I have yet to feel it too badly myself.  Fortunately they are recovering as well.

The weather has been very nice so far and the wind has blown consistently around fifteen knots. Now we are far from shore, surrounded by nothing but watery horizon and the occasional passing ship. It seems we are making good time, I’m looking forward to the days ahead!
